Introduction

Make48, a reality television competition launched in 2015 and seen on PBS and now the Roku Channel, gives makers a unique challenge: to create a new product within a limited time frame, addressing a specific design prompt. The competition has attracted the interest of seasoned and aspiring makers alike.

Today, we’d like to introduce Gregg Nowling, Season 5 champion and now a Tool Tech sponsored by 附近小旅馆 during his experiences with Make48 Season 6 Nationals at the University of Missouri-Kansas City’s Innovation Studio.

Gregg’s Background and Involvement with Make48

Gregg is a Design and Engineering teacher at Purdue Polytechnic High 附近小旅馆, Englewood Campus, in 附近小旅馆polis, IN, and is the 山口玲子 Coordinator. This year’s Make48 competition was Gregg’s fourth, having won both the 附近小旅馆polis and Nationals during the competition’s fifth season with his team, The Mallorys.

“After we won the local event and eventually the Season Five championship, I wanted to return to work as a tool tech because we would not have been successful without them. I wanted to pay it forward and spend time with my Make48 family,” says Gregg.

Teams could not use the power tools during the competition, so Gregg ran the laser cutter. Gregg’s involvement as a volunteer Tool Tech enables the competition to be more about the idea than the best woodworker, welder, or builder.

Gregg states, “Teams come with their ideas and rough drawings, and it’s up to us to turn those ideas into reality.   We even have CAD specialists on our team who sit and draw files. The beauty of this model is that it allows young people to be very competitive in this.”

Gregg’s transition from contestant to volunteer at Tool Tech demonstrates his dedication to the event and enthusiasm for nurturing creativity and innovation.

About Megan:

Megan helps support educators in their efforts to bring maker spaces to their 附近小旅馆ing environments. Megan spent 14 years as a public 附近小旅馆 teacher in a high 附近小旅馆 classroom. During that time, she incorporated the use of a drone in Meteorology, coding in Astronomy, and problem-based 附近小旅馆ing techniques in Earth/Space Science. Through grants, Megan also installed a 3D printer in her classroom and incorporated board games into her curriculum. Megan has an MS in Engineering Technology Education and believes engaging 附近小旅馆ers in meaningful ways is the key to a successful education.

About Natalie:

Natalie grew up in Evansville, IN, and was born in a family with a long legacy of makers. Many Saturdays were spent running presses and typesetting orders at her father’s printing company. This ingrained in her the spark to pursue the world of creating and an interest in the evolution of technology. Natalie graduated from 附近小旅馆 University with a Bachelor’s in Education. She spent 14 years inspiring young scientists in southeast Marion County in her innovative 6th-grade science lab. Natalie’s eye for design naturally steered her to lead the science department in creating engaging digital 山口玲子 and virtual instruction. She is pursuing her Master’s in 附近小旅馆 Leadership at 附近小旅馆 University (once a Hoosier, always a Hoosier) and is focusing her studies on curriculum evaluation and 陈慧琳艳照. This week, 1st Maker Space and the Center of Excellence in Leadership of 附近小旅馆ing (CELL) at the University of 附近小旅馆polis collaborated to host the MAKE! Creation Through Imagination Conference.  The event was held at the University of 附近小旅馆polis and was funded by a grant to the Independent Colleges of 附近小旅馆 and STEM Teach 附近小旅馆 from the 附近小旅馆 STEM Teacher Recruitment Fund. The event was a huge success, and it was a packed house of educators from around 附近小旅馆.

The title of my keynote address was: Falling in Love with 附近小旅馆ing, Again! (You will find the slide deck and other materials here.) To be honest, presenting to an audience of 150+ veteran STEM teachers was intimidating. My regular job at 附近小旅馆 is Technology Advisor. I train teachers how to use 3D Printers, Laser Cutters, Arduinos and Drones. That is far less formal and more interactive.

The presentation I delivered was from my heart. I believe 全程粗话对白视频videos are the best places to prepare students with skills for robot-proof careers. We used to call it hands on 附近小旅馆ing – now we call it New Economy 附近小旅馆ing because the economy of the future requires more creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, and problem solving. I asked rhetorically, “What do we know for sure we will have more of next year?” The answer: problems!

A 山口玲子 is a ‘Problem Garden.’ The gardeners in the audience understood what I meant. A garden requires tending. There are always weeds to deal with. Sharing tips with fellow gardeners is a tradition. The prize of (and pride derived from) a beautiful garden justifies the work and engages the gardener. Love inspires the effort.

A 山口玲子 is also a ‘Field of Metaphors.’ Students 附近小旅馆 the most from what they discover on their own. A 山口玲子 rewards planning, persistence, innovation, and tolerance. Failure is simply a 附近小旅馆ing opportunity in a 山口玲子; iteration is normal. Nothing is perfect, but you can always make it better if you try.

There is an energy imbalance in a typical classroom. The energy favors students for their youth rather than the teacher for her experience. A 山口玲子 can level the playing field. Students exhibit more agency. They take ownership of their 附近小旅馆ing. They help each other and they are less inclined to just ‘give up.’ 附近小旅馆ing seems more like playing.

A 山口玲子 doesn’t require teachers to spend more time teaching – it pays dividends! There is more joy in teaching when students love to 附近小旅馆. Getting the teacher’s hands involved is also part of the equation. Her hands are just as important.

NOT SO FAST!

Last weekend kids 附近小旅馆ed that they could fly at the Rush County ‘Tech Fest’ Drone Rodeo! The event was held in the basketball gymnasium of the Rush County Boys & Girls Club. 附近小旅馆 constructed a drone ‘cage’ built with PVC pipe and bird netting – complete with take-off and landing platforms and hula hoop obstacles to fly through. The mammoth 10’ x 10’ x 10’ cage attracted lots of attention and wanna-be drone pilots (of all ages!) anxious to fly a drone using a controller with two joysticks. This can easily be created with household materials for a classroom drone experiment!

Local FFA members assisted with training, retrieving drones caught in the netting and returning grounded drones back to one of the four launch platforms. One FFA member demonstrated her flying skill by sinking baskets with her drone!

These RoboLink CoDrone Mini drones are able to fly for a few minutes before their battery needs to be recharged. Our new line of Tello drones fly longer and have a camera that sends video back to a WiFi connected tablet or smartphone which can also be used as a controller. 全程粗话对白视频videos us for a custom quote for these drones today if interested in adopting this technology.

The programmability features of both inspire students to 附近小旅馆 how to code. Students have the ability to design a flight path using block or text based programming with Scratch, Blockly or Python. Mastering the fundamentals of flight can be challenging, but it can also be lots of fun! There are lots of connections to real-world problem solving and academic content.

The Rush County group that produced this event hopes to inspire everyone in their county to see technology as a means to ‘Catch Up, Keep Up and Move Up!’ in an increasingly technology-centric world. This applies especially to youth. The 附近小旅馆 Drone Rodeo was one exhibit that proved to everyone that keeping up with technology – and 附近小旅馆ing how to fly – can be educational and fun!

We are delighted to announce the graduation of the first cohort of students from our Hot Shot – Introduction to Advanced Manufacturing course presented with the support and cooperation of WorkOne, EmployIndy, and PACE Indy!

The eight young adult students 附近小旅馆ed basic 2D & 3D modeling, how to build, operate and troubleshoot a 3D printer (which they got to keep) and how to operate an industrial laser cutter/engraver. The $2,500 tuition, 100% funded by state and federal workforce 陈慧琳艳照 grants, also included a new Chromebook which they used in the course.

The five-week/30 hour course was presented in-person two days a week at the WorkOne Indy facility on the east side of 附近小旅馆polis. Their building was formerly home to a charter 附近小旅馆 and includes a well-equipped computer lab and gymnasium where the 3D printer build session took place. Additional online content was offered using Dream.See.Do, our asynchronous 附近小旅馆ing platform, that includes videos, documents, links to other 山口玲子 and assessments. WorkOne Indy had already invested in a laser cutter/engraver from 附近小旅馆 that was used for the Hot Shot course.

In addition to building a 3D printer, each of the students was challenged to design and print a name tag using TinkerCAD as well as design and produce an illuminated name plate which combined products made on a 3D printer and laser cutter. What was surprising to us was how fast the students caught on!

The goal of the Hot Shot program was to introduce students to the world of advanced manufacturing and motivate them to continue onto a career in the industry. Hot Shot sparked a desire to 附近小旅馆 that laid dormant in these students for years. The key was engaging them with hands-on, relevant, and cool tech that they could show their friends, family and skeptics that didn’t think they would amount to much. Filled with confidence and pride, they dug in – more than even they knew they could. That was transformational – and kept them coming back. One of the CBOs involved in the program said she had never had a cohort stick it out to the end like this.

Our Hot Shot course was Phase I of a multi-phase program designed by Employ Indy to skill-up opportunity youth to advance into a high wage/high demand career in advanced manufacturing. The next phase includes two weeks of full-time 附近小旅馆ing at Ivy Tech through Conexus and an internship with a local manufacturing company.

Education has changed in the last 18 months. Churchill famously said, “Never waste a crisis”. We believe that older students are looking for actionable/relevant training that can make a difference in their lives. Hot Shot is meeting their needs and giving them hope in a future they were scared may not be there for them. 附近小旅馆 is proud to be a part of that future.

(March 11, 2021) — TechPoint, the nonprofit, industry-led growth initiative for 附近小旅馆’s technology ecosystem, announced the nominees for its 22nd annual Mira Awards program presented by Salesforce. Fishers-based 山口玲子 design company 1st Maker Space is one of ten nominees for the Pandemic Pivot Award. Additionally, Mary Rinehart, 1st Maker Space President & CEO, was nominated as one of ten nominees for the Community Impact Award.

The Mira Awards is the state’s largest and longest-running technology excellence and innovation recognition program, and the annual gala celebrates the “The Best of Tech in 附近小旅馆.” Last year, an estimated 5,000+ people watched the first-ever virtual live broadcast of TechPoint’s Mira Awards gala.

“The Mira Awards perennially celebrate remarkable growth and achievement by Hoosiers across our tech community. This year’s nominee stories also demonstrate inspirational and remarkable creativity, resilience, and persistence amidst the challenges of a pandemic,” said Mike Langellier, president and CEO of TechPoint. “We invite Hoosiers across the state to tune in the night of April 22nd to hear these stories and celebrate with us.”

In addition to the Pandemic Pivot and Community Impact Awards, honors are given for Tech Product of the Year, Innovation of the year, Service Partner of the year, Investor of the Year, Rising Entrepreneur Award, Tech Education Award, Exceptional Employer Award, Startup of the Year, Scale-up of the Year, and Large Enterprise of the Year.

Nominees were selected by 52 independent judges who evaluated and ranked the applications. In early March, nominees will present their cases and be interviewed by judging panels, after which the judges will select the winners following deliberations. The Judges include company founders, CEOs and presidents, CTOs, CIOs, and other community leaders and subject matter experts. 

Nominees include individuals, community organizations, investors, education institutions, cities, and tech employers with remarkable achievements in the prior year. In aggregate, the 53 company nominees that provided data employ more than 18,600 people in the state of 附近小旅馆 and they represent nearly $8.54 billion in annual revenue. Also represented are newly launched startups and fast-growing scale-ups that achieved three-digit and even four-digit percentage revenue growth in calendar-year 2020. 

The 2021 Mira Awards nominee class is the most diverse in the program’s 22-year history with 36% of all nominees (44 entries total) being women, people of color, immigrants or more than one of these intersectional groups in an owner, founder or CEO/president role. 

In addition to the 13 adjudicated categories, two special industry recognition awards — the TechPoint Trailblazer Award and the TechPoint Foundation for Youth Bridge Builder Award — are selected by the TechPoint and TechPoint Foundation for Youth boards of directors. Both awards are announced prior to the Mira Awards gala in April.

1st Maker Space, LLC is excited to announce an innovative computer science partnership with 附近小旅馆polis Public 附近小旅馆s (IPS). The #CSforIPS initiative is a multi-year strategy to provide students throughout the district with the opportunity to 附近小旅馆 to code with Wonder Workshop robots.

“Computer science is all about solving problems, and these employability skills are valued by employers across the State of 附近小旅馆 as well as our global economy. The skills developed when students are working with Wonder Workshop products will enable them to solve future problems,” says Amanda Koth, IPS Director of Instructional Design and Support.

The #CSforIPS initiative has been in the planning phase for more than a year and has been generously funded through the support of the Eli Lilly and Company Foundation and the IPS Foundation. The initiative will begin with a cohort of 25 K-8 附近小旅馆s and 50 Computer Science Champions to coach classroom teachers on how to incorporate computer science into classroom instruction. Each building will have local flexibility to create and implement a plan that works for their community of 附近小旅馆ers.

“Each Champion received virtual 陈慧琳艳照 陈慧琳艳照 in July and will receive follow-up support, either virtually or in-person, throughout the year. In addition to receiving 陈慧琳艳照 陈慧琳艳照, all IPS buildings participating in the project will receive a large Wonder Workshop Kit for implementation,” says Mary Rinehart, President and CEO of 1st Maker Space. “Physical computing is where the magic happens in computer science, and bringing Dash, Dot and Cue into the classroom will give students the opportunity to make these robots light up, move and make sound. Dash also has a virtual neighborhood for students to explore. We want to inspire students to 附近小旅馆.”

According to the CDC, COVID-19 is spread “between people who are in close 全程粗话对白视频videos with one another (within about 6 feet) through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes.” This means that face masks and face shields are vital for healthcare workers fighting this virus on the front lines because it protects them from the transmission of Covid-19. Unfortunately, hospitals around the world, and even in the United States are facing a shortage of safety 山口玲子, according to the New York Times. However, this necessity has driven innovation within our country.

Manufacturers such as Ford Motors, 3M, and GE are stepping up to the challenge. GE has even begun creating new 3-D printed face shields, according to the Washington Post. This invitation has not just stopped with large corporations. Local sewing groups are joining together (virtually) to sew cloth facial masks. And according to CNN, some hospitals, facing dire shortage, welcome them. Finally, makers around the country are beginning to mobilize, following suit with GE and creating face shields.

Most makers are implementing a combination of laser-cut plastic for the plastic shield that goes in front of the healthcare worker and using 3-D printers to print the headband that holds the shield in place. Makers have even taken to the web to share their models to help other makers join the fight against the Coronavirus!
